The Norwegian Competition Authority may intervene against A-pressen’s purchase from Edda Media because the acquisition would weaken competition in several regions.
The Authority has notified the parties that it is considering the prohibition of A-pressen’s purchase of the newspapers Varden, Fredriksstad Blad, Drammen Tidende and Tønsberg Blad from Edda Media.
– Our investigation shows that the acquisition will lead to a significant restriction of competition in the market for advertising in printed newspapers in the areas of Telemark, Fredriksstad, Drammen and Tønsberg and Holmestrand, says Director General for Competition Christine Meyer.
The Authority also found that the acquisition will lead to a significant restriction of competition in the market for news reporting in Telemark.
– We have therefore notified the parties that we are considering prohibiting parts of the acquisition, says Meyer.
The findings are based partly on a survey the Competition Authority has carried out among subscribers and advertisers in six of the parties’ newspapers.
The Competition Authority emphasizes that the warning of possible intervention is not a final decision. According to the Competition Act, companies have 15 working days to comment on the Authority’s preliminary assessment. The Authority then has 15 working days to make a final decision.
