The Norwegian Competition Authority has warned Aschehaug & Co. (W. Nygaard) AS and NorgesGruppen ASA that it may be appropriate to intervene against the concentration of Norli Gruppen AS and NorgesGruppen Bok og Papir AS.
– The reason for the warning is first and foremost that competition will be reduced in a number of local markets if the merger goes forward. Consumers will have too few competing bookstores to choose from, says Jostein Skaar, director at the NCA.
In the Authority’s opinion, the merger will lead to reduced competition in the sale of physical books from general bookstores in Trondheim, Kristiansand, Drammen, Kongsberg, Lillehammer, Haugesund, Levanger and Sarpsborg.
Under the Competition Act, the companies have 15 working days to comment on the Authority's notice. The Authority then has 15 working days to render its final decision.
A public version of the notification (norwegian only) will be made available in Week 6
