New Director General for Competition Christine B. Meyer

Christine Benedichte Meyer took over as the head of the Norwegian Competition Authority on 1 April 2011. The position of Director General for Competition has a six-year fixed term.

– I am looking forward to be the director general for competition and to use all the skills I have acquired through academic study and the practice of politics.

At the same time, she approaches the task with great humility and expect to face a steep learning curve the first year.

– My ambition is to make the Authority more visible and to set the agenda so as to reduce the risk of anti-competitive behaviour. In addition, we must work to ensure that we retain and develop all the skilled employees the Competition Authority has in Bergen.

Background
Meyer is coming from a position as a professor at the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration, specialising in mergers and acquisitions. Meyer has also held important political posts as both state secretary and as a member of Bergen city council.

Meyer is trained as an economist and has a doctorate from the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration (NHH). In the period 1989 to 1997, she was, in turns, a researcher at the Institute for Research in Economics and Business Administration and a Research Fellow at NHH. In 1997 she was appointed associate professor at NHH and during 1999 to 2001, Meyer served as the International Vice-Chancellor. Meyer was promoted to professor in 2007.

From 2001 to 2003, Meyer was State Secretary in the Bondevik government in the Ministry for Labour and Government Administration with responsibility for, among other things, monitoring competition policy. After returning to NHH, she was again called to politics as a finance commissioner for the Conservative Party in Bergen in the autumn of 2007. Her most important project as a finance commissioner was to reduce absence due to sickness among city employees.

In spring 2009, Meyer changed to become health commissioner and here she initiated a comprehensive change towards increased efficiency and more user-oriented services. Meyer resigned as commissioner at the turn of the year 2010/2011 to become the director general for competition.

Meyer's research interests have focused on strategic and organizational change with particular emphasis on mergers and acquisitions. She has written her doctoral thesis on mergers and acquisitions in addition to two books and numerous international and national articles. Most of the mergers and acquisitions Meyer has studied have been of sufficient size that there had been a potential to exercise market power. Meyer's research has largely been case-based and focused on understanding the companies' strategic behaviour and choices in implementation.
