– Competition policy must stand firm also in times of crisis

– We do not solve the financial crisis by weakening competition policy. On the contrary, it is very important to protect competition in difficult times, says the director of the Competition Authority Knut Eggum Johansen.

Today he presents, together with his Nordic colleagues, a report on competition policy in times of crisis. The competition authorities of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Greenland and Island have analysed how the present and previous economic crises have influenced the competition policy, and what lessons can be learned from those experiences. The report contains advice and recommendations on the way the crisis should be handled so that we end up with a strengthened economy.

The report which is called Competition Policy and Financial Crisis – Lessons Learned and the Way Forward, underlines how important it is that competition stands fast and that competition rules are strictly enforced even in times of crisis. The report was published on Thursday 10 September in a press conference in Reykjavik, where the representatives of the competition authorities of the Nordic countries were gathered for their annual co-operation meeting.

– The history clearly shows that measures that restrict competition in reality aggravate the economic difficulties and prolong the crisis further than necessary. We must therefore ensure that the measures we take to handle the crisis are designed in such a way that they do not twist or weaken competition. The measures should also be clearly time-limited, underlines Eggum Johansen.
