What is the parallel tariff?
The «parallel tariff» means that the price of a taxi trip is calculated by adding together a time tariff and a distance tariff that run simultaneously during the entire trip.
The time tariff is the price for the time for which you use the taxi.
The distance tariff is the price for the distance over which you use the taxi.
Example of price calculation with the parallel tariff for a given taxi
The trip is 10 km long and takes 15 minutes. Calculation of the parallel rate system:
Price = Start + (15 minutes x time tariff per minute) + (10 km x distance tariff per km)
Regulation on tariff calculation and maximum prices for licensed taxi transport by motor vehicle
More on the regulation
The regulation is divided into three chapters.
Chapter 1 contains general provisions on tariff calculation. Chapter 1 applies to taxi transport covered by the regulation. This means it applies also to taxi transport that is not subject to the maximum price regulation under Chapter 2.
According to Chapter 1 § 2, taxi transport covered by the regulation uses the parallel tariff.
Chapter 2 of the regulation sets the tariffs for taxis in areas that are subject to maximum price regulation. In these areas, no taxi can demand additional payments or any price higher than the price stipulated in Chapter 2. Some geographic areas are exempted from maximum price regulation. Maximum price regulation does not apply when there are more than four passengers in the taxi. The tariffs in these regulations are only the maximum rates; it is therefore permissible to charge lower tariffs than what is stated.
The regulation’s § 1 provides an overview of the geographic areas that are exempt from the maximum price regulation. Areas may be exempted from the maximum price regulation by regulation if there are two or more taxi companies in the area. Furthermore, the conditions must be such as to facilitate adequate competition.
The map below gives an overview of the areas that are exempt from maximum price control;
- Nedre Eiker
- Øvre Eiker
According to Chapter 3, the regulation comes into force on 1 September 2011. From the same date Regulation No. 265 of 9 March 2007 on maximum prices for driving a taxi is abolished.
